Morphological and Morphometric Variations of Erythrocyte in Clarias Gariepinus, Bufo Bufo and Agama Agama Using Some Histological Stains
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Erythrocytes are highly specialized and the most abundant cell type in vertebrates’ blood. Their main function is the transportation of oxygen to tissues of the body via hemoglobin. Methods: The study was aimed at evaluating erythrocyte morphology in Clarias gariepinus (Cg), Bufo bufo (Bb), and Agama agama (Aa) using different stains; Also, morphometric analysis of erythrocyte was evaluated in stains with best affinity. Blood sample of Cg, Bb and Aa was collected using syringe. Smears from each animal were made on glass slides and stained with Giemsa, Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), and methylene blue. Erythrocytes diameter were measured using a standardized ocular micrometer. The area and volume of erythrocyte were calculated from the measurements. Results: Erythrocytes shapes ranges from spherical in Cg to oval in Aa. Giemsa demonstrated Cg and Bb erythrocytes better than H&E and methylene blue stains while H&E demonstrated erythrocytes of Aa better than Giemsa and methylene blue. Erythrocytes diameter, area and volume of Bb were significantly higher (P<0.001) when compared with Cg and Aa. Conclusion: Erythrocytes shape, size, area and volume vary in different species and could be used to study evolutionary trend. The variation in erythrocyte size is associated with chromosome number and genome size.

Growth Performance of Clarias gariepinus Fed Different Levels of Agama agama Meal Diets
This study was investigated the utilization of agama lizard meat meal (Agama agama) as dietary protein source in the diets of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings (MW±SE = 33.48 g±0.13). The fingerlings were fed four Isonitrogenous and Isocaloric diets containing blends of agama lizard meal in percentages of 0 (Diet I), 10 (Diet II), 20 (Diet III) and 30% (Diet IV) respectively for 8 weeks at 5% body...

We document populations of the introduced African rainbow lizard (Agama agama africana) in Homestead, Miami-Dade County; Hollywood, Broward County; Palm City, Martin County; Punta Gorda, Charlotte County; and Sanford, Seminole County. The Homestead and Punta Gorda populations have been established for over 10 yr and have expanded at least 0.5 km from the point of introduction. The Palm City pop...

Agama agama, the agamid rainbow lizard, has been reported to serve as transport and reservoir host to several protozoan and helminth parasites. We randomly sampled 310 specimens between May and July, 2005, at Oyingbo, Lagos, Nigeria (6 degrees 34'60" N-3 degrees 19'59" E and 6 degrees 34'60" N-3 degrees 19'59" E).They harboured four species of nematodes: Strongyluris brevicaudata, Parapharyngod...

Worldwide, enterotoxigenic Esch-erichia coli is the leading bacterial pathogen that causes traveler's diarrhea , followed by Campylobacter je-juni and then Salmonella spp., which are the causative pathogens for >25% of traveler's diarrhea in Africa (1). Nontyphoidal salmonellosis is mostly ca...
